CCSD Exceeds State Averages for Overall College and Career Readiness
The Cherokee County School District continues to exceed state averages for overall college and career readiness.
The Georgia Department of Education today released 2023 College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) scores, which assess student future readiness using data including high school graduation rate and Georgia Milestones standardized test scores. While results from these individual measures are released throughout the year, the CCRPI process uses additional formulas to evaluate and compare the data.
“Thank you to our teachers, support staff and school and district leaders for continuing to raise the bar for our students,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “We’re grateful for your dedication to preparing every one of our students for future success. We will use these scores to improve instruction, expand course offerings and strengthen programs for helping struggling students make greater gains.”
New this year, CCRPI no longer is one 0-100 score; instead, individual scores are calculated for all components.
For Readiness, which measures overall preparation for college and career success, CCSD earned scores of 87 for elementary, exceeding the state average of 82.3; 84.5 for middle, exceeding Georgia’s 82; and 79.7 for high school, exceeding Georgia’s 71.4. The scores rank CCSD third highest among metro Atlanta counties for both elementary and high and fifth for middle.
For Content Mastery, which measures core academic knowledge, CCSD earned scores of 77.1 for elementary, exceeding the state average of 64.7; 69.4 for middle, exceeding Georgia’s 60.9; and 80.6 for high school, exceeding Georgia’s 65. The scores rank CCSD third highest among metro Atlanta counties for high school, fourth for elementary and sixth for middle.
For high school Graduation Rate, CCSD earned an overall rate of 92.6, exceeding the state average of 84.9 and ranking second highest among metro Atlanta counties.
For Progress, which compares how students, by similar academic achievement levels, are improving in academic achievement, CCSD earned scores of 88.5 for elementary, exceeding the state average of 85.8; 76.5 for middle, compared to Georgia’s 80.8; and 83 for high school, exceeding Georgia’s 79.2. For middle school, the only level where CCSD did not exceed state averages, a closer review shows struggles among English Learners working on English language proficiency (58.9% progress).
For Closing Gaps, which compares how students, by demographic subgroups, are improving in academic achievement, CCSD earned scores of 48.2 for elementary, compared to Georgia’s 66.7; 33.3 for middle, compared to Georgia’s 52.5; and 54.2 for high school, compared to Georgia’s 67.5. Economically disadvantaged students, English Learners and students with learning disabilities saw the greatest challenges in meeting improvement targets. A closer look shows the most challenging area in elementary was science, in middle school was science and social studies and in high school was American literature.
“I am proud to see Georgia students making academic progress and succeeding in and out of core subject areas,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “There are clear areas of strength, and areas for improvement as well – as a state, we will continue to invest in academic recovery to address targeted needs and ensure every student receives an excellent education.”
